A Woman is No Man

Etaf Rum

Kayleigh's Thoughts

A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum is a powerful multi-generational novel following three Palestinian women across two continents and multiple decades. Set between Palestine and Brooklyn from the 1990s to the early 2000s, the story weaves the lives of a grandmother, mother, and daughter as they navigate tradition, trauma, and silence within a patriarchal culture that expects women to be obedient, invisible, and silent.

Told from alternating perspectives, the novel sheds light on the unspoken domestic abuse, generational cycles, and deep yearning for freedom and self-expression.

This book left me heartbroken, reflective, and more compassionate—one of the most important stories I read all year.
