Why does sin work so hard to get you by yourself?

Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote that sin demands to have a person by himself, and that it withdraws him from the community. Inés takes that seriously, then shows the same strategy at work on the African plain. Elephants and Cape buffalo turn outward and ring the young and the sick so a lion cannot reach them. A zebra’s stripes confuse a predator only while the herd is standing together. The animal a lion takes is the one that has drifted. When a believer separates from the body of Christ, that believer becomes reachable the same way.

Peter writes that we have been born again through the living and enduring word of God. Inés sits on that one word, born, because no one is born by themselves. A birth implies a family. Paul tells the Gentile believers in Ephesus that they have been adopted, no longer foreigners and strangers but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household. In the Roman world, those were the two things an outsider most longed for and could never earn. The writer of Hebrews will not picture an empty race track either. He surrounds the runner with a great cloud of witnesses.
