Lessons in Chemistry

Bonnie Garmus

Kayleigh's Thoughts

In Lessons in Chemistry, debut author Bonnie Garmus crafts a witty, poignant, and unflinchingly honest portrait of a brilliant female chemist navigating the hostile landscape of 1960s America. The novel follows Elizabeth Zott, a fiercely independent scientist whose career is derailed by systemic sexism—only to find unexpected influence as the host of a cooking show where she subtly teaches chemistry and empowerment to a generation of overlooked housewives. Blending historical fiction with a sharp feminist lens, the story manages to be both humorous and heartbreaking.

This book surprised me with how powerfully it mixed humor, heartbreak, and a whole lot of chemistry.
