Jodi Picoult

Kayleigh's Thoughts

By Any Other Name is a dual-timeline historical fiction novel by Jodi Picoult that explores the intersection of gender, authorship, and identity through two interconnected narratives: one set in modern-day New York’s theater scene, and the other in Elizabethan England during Shakespeare’s time. The story follows Melina, a modern playwright facing sexism in the theater industry, and Emilia Bassano, a historical figure believed by some to be the true author behind Shakespeare’s plays.

Picoult weaves meticulous research with emotional depth, illuminating centuries of female erasure in the arts. Picoult constructs a bold, compelling narrative that challenges the legacy of Shakespeare while empowering the silenced voices behind the curtain.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this story—from its Shakespearean secrets to its powerful commentary on women and art, it left me in awe.
