Beyond That, The Sea

Laura Spence-Ash

Kayleigh's Thoughts

Set during World War II, Beyond That, the Sea follows a young British girl, Beatrix, who is evacuated to America to escape the war and ends up forging deep bonds with the family that takes her in. The story spans several decades, chronicling Beatrix’s formative years in the U.S. and her complex feelings about identity, home, and belonging after she returns to post-war England. Rather than focusing on the front lines or dramatic battles, the novel explores the quieter emotional toll of displacement and found family.

I wanted to feel more, but this quiet novel still left me reflecting on home, identity, and growing up between two worlds.
